What to Expect from Psychodynamic Psychotherapy

Psychodynamic psychotherapy focuses on understanding the deeper patterns in your thoughts, feelings and behaviours, and how past experiences continue to shape your present life. Rather than offering surface-level solutions, the work aims to get to the root of what is causing distress or difficulty.

Sessions take place weekly and give you space to think and speak freely. Your therapist will listens closely and help you make sense of links between what is happening now and earlier experiences that may still be influencing you.

During therapy, feelings or memories you have pushed aside can emerge. This is an important part of the process, allowing these experiences to be understood rather than avoided or repeated.

Over time, you will begin to recognise patterns in how you think, feel and respond to others. With this understanding, your therapist will work with you to address the issues that feel like they’re holding you back.
